Interview Techniques

Ensure you have all the details of the interview including directions and job specification where possible.


Revisit your CV prior to the interview as you may have a number of CV's focused on different positions.


Always arrive at the interview venue with plenty of time to spare.


Ensure that you look presentable.


Find out as much as possible about the company - request a brochure or view their web site. This will give you an overview of the company, their business and its culture.


Do not smoke at an interview, even if the interviewer does.


Answer any questions honestly and if you don't know the answer, say so.


Maintain eye contact throughout the interview and show your enthusiasm.


At the end of the interview, attempt to accertain your standing - a second interview, a rejection or comments on your CV.


Understand the vacancy. You should try and gather as much information as possible about the role prior to the interview. If one is available you should request a copy of the job description which should be read carefully in order to understand the key requirements and responsibilities of the role.


Research the company. Many employers will be interested in finding out what you know about their business. It is important to attend an interview with a reasonable understanding of the organisations core activities. Most information is freely available on the internet so take the time to view their website as a minimum. More detailed information can be obtained by conducting web searches for any relevant news stories and recent developments.


Prepare your responses. It is impossible to predict what you may be asked at interview but you can prepare by considering what questions may arise. Consider questions you may have been asked in previous interviews and ensure that you can answer any questions an interviewer may have regarding the experience outlined in your CV.


Prepare your questions. Many interviewers will ask if you have any questions at some point during the interview. Take the time beforehand to prepare some relevant questions. Your questions should relate specifically to the job or the company. Do not be afraid to question whether the interviewer considers your experience to be relevant.

You may wish to ask the question "Are there any areas where you feel my experience would not be right?". This allows you the opportunity to counter any negative opinions they may have formed.
Plan the journey. Turning up late, even with a perfectly valid excuse can jeopardise your chances of a successful interview. You should ensure that you arrive at the interview at least 10 minutes before the allocated time. To do this you should familiarise yourself with the location in advance, still allowing plenty of time for the journey.
